Every signer must demonstrate a willingness to sign the documents without coercion. He/she must also be aware of what they are signing and understand the significance of the transaction. Documents cannot be notarized if there is any cognitive impairment.

Every signer must show valid (not expired) photo identification. All identification must contain a photo, a physical description, a signature and a serial number. Texas recognizes the following types of identification:
State-issued driver's license
State-issued identification card
U.S. passport issued by the U.S. Department of State
A credible witness
U.S. military ID
Permanent resident card, or "green card," issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
Personal knowledge of the signer by the Notary
